IMPORTANT NEWS – CUTS TO FUNDING FOR TRAINING

Government announces cut backs to training support – these will affect your business!

Significant change to training support was announced in both the State and Commonwealth Budgets.

The State Government has decreased funding in some key courses by up to 85% and this means if you commence Government supported trainees in Business or Retail, after 1st July you will be expected to make a significant contribution to the cost of that training. The Federal Government has also announced changes to incentive payments from July 1st that will affect both the timing and value of some incentives.

However trainees who commence training before 1st July will benefit from the conditions that currently exist.  If you have been seriously considering training for your staff in Retail, or Business, you should arrange enrolments now or accept the significantly higher charges that will apply.

 For example

  • The current Certificate III Retail enrolment fee is $295 – this will increase to in excess of $1500.
  • The current employer incentive available for an eligible Certificate III Retail trainee is $4,000 ($1500 at 3 month, $2,500 on completion), this will change to $3,000 (paid on completion only).

To assess the impact of the cutbacks on your situation, I urge you to us. We will outline what you can expect to pay moving forward, but more importantly right now, how we can enrol any new trainees immediately so you can avoid the higher charges, at least in the short term.

Please contact Annette Carlin at FS Learning today on 0407 991 145, while your current entitlements are still available.

These new cutbacks will have a significant effect on the way you can benefit from training entitlements.  You have just 3 weeks to enrol your employees before the new rises come into effect – ring now.

Please be assured that FS Learning will continue to work with you to achieve the best possible outcomes from your training.

The T2020 Challenge – The Way Forward

The T2020 Challenge – The Way Forward

A special meeting of the VANA Board was held on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 to discuss both the opportunities and potential ramifications for Victorian Newsagents associated with the recently announced News Limited future distribution model. It is apparent that every Victorian Newsagent will be affected by the changes. A communication package is currently being formulated and a series of meetings – details below – have been scheduled so that ALL Newsagents have the opportunity to hear first-hand the facts and how VANA has represented the interests of Victorian Newsagents. The meetings will provide a forum for Newsagents to ask questions and seek clarification about industry changes. News Limited’s roll out of the new distribution model is about to commence in Queensland and Victorian Newsagents have a 12 month window of opportunity to identify and address the potential impacts on their business prior to the new model being introduced in Victoria
.
As stated by Stephen Kaye HWT Circulation Director, at the VANA industry Awards Night on Saturday 12thof May “So whilst HWT will embark on territory reform in the same vein as the approach being taken in Queensland, it is our intention to permit newsagent-driven voluntary consolidation to continue to take place in Victoria throughout this process”. It is essential that Victorian Newsagents use this time effectively to ensure they are well placed when the News Limited model begins operation in Victoria.
VANA cannot stress more strongly the importance for all Newsagents to attend one of the communication sessions. Below is a list of Dates, Locations and Times – please select the most convenient time for you to attend and RSVP by clicking on the date you wish to attend and follow the prompts. Once completed you will receive a confirmation e-mail.

Frankly Speaking with Franklyn Scholar

PAPERS DELIVERED TO NEWSAGENCY DIPLOMA GRADUATES

On Friday 10th of February 2012, the Victorian Association of News Agencies (VANA) celebrated the graduation of its inaugural class of Diploma of Retail Management – Newsagency participants.

18 business owners and newsagency managers and supervisors graduated and celebrated their achievement at a Graduation dinner at The Wharf  Hotel in Southbank where they were presented with their Nationally Accredited Diploma.

FS Learning secured funding through the Commonwealth Government through Service Skills Australia and EBPPP. The aim of the customised Diploma was to develop a training program that would offer newsagents and their team the crucial skills required to remain competitive and adapt to an industry that has a unique set of challenges and a constantly changing environment. The program also included the opportunity to network and develop stronger relationships with industry peers.

Gerard Munday, VANA Chairman, said, “some fantastic developments were evident as a result of the program, so it is fair to say that the program has been a success. We see this as a great way to help ensure the future of our industry and the success of our members. An integral and crucial component of the program was one on one business mentoring for each participant. This highlighted some great successes on both a personal and a professional level” Well done to all of the participants! FS Learning can help your business apply for specific funding to address ant workforce

T2020 Update

Associations meet with News Limited CEO to discuss new model

On 20 April, all Newsagents Associations, met with News Limited’s CEO Kim Williams, Jerry Harris, Managing Director of Group Newspapers and Digital Products, andGary McKayGroup Circulation Business Manager.

It was an opportunity for the Associations representatives to meet with Kim Williams and discuss the current state and future opportunities of the newsagency channel in light of restructuring taking place at News Limited.

Mr Williams was very positive about the value of the channel and said News Limited needed the newsagency channel to be part of its progression into a print and digital future. He said a new process to produce new sales and distribution arrangements for News Limited newspapers will be rolled out starting in June 2012 for Queensland. News Limited has stated that they will also commence the equivalent process for NSW/ACT and Victoria on a voluntary basis for agents that were prepared to meet the criteria of the new model.

This new model will be finalised at a meeting of News Limited Managers in early May.

Jerry Harris did confirm the following:-

  • Leaving the model as we know it today was “not negotiable”.  A new model will be implemented.
  • Customers’ details, including management and billing WILL be migrated from the newsagents system into the News Limited system.
  • Newsagents on the New Distribution Contract will be paid under a fee for service model  not commission based
  • Newsagents on a New Retail Contract will be paid on a commission basis to incorporate an incentive scheme, rewarding effort.
  • All State Associations will be consulted and called on to assist in the implementation of the new model

The message from News Limited was very clear that the current territory system for newsagents was out-dated and not cost effective.  Larger, more efficient territories is the major objective of this project.

After News Limited’s meeting in early May a formal explanation of this new model, including the new Contracts, will be made by News Limited.

Having informed Kim Williams of the current state of the industry and the need to put back the certainty and security that is sadly missing today, all Associations will be working hard to work with News Limited to achieve mutually win-win outcomes.  Kim Williams was very aware of this need and reconfirmed his company’s commitment to achieve this.

HWT – Offical AFL Collector Cards Album and Series

From April 21, readers of the Herald Sun and Sunday Herald Sun will be given the opportunity to purchase the Official AFL Collector Cards Album and Series when they purchase a copy of each day’s paper.

For newsagents who wish to promote this collection to their home delivery customers, we have produced a home delivery flier offering seven-day home delivery customers the opportunity to have their full set reserved for them at their local newsagency and ready for collection at the end of the promotion.

The flyer offers home delivery customers a significant discount off the normal price of the full set. Newsagents will receive full commission for sets sold with this offer by sending in the flier complete with customer details attached to your return form.

These fliers will offer customers the option of reserving a set at the Herald Sun Shop. Should any of your customers take this option, you will also receive full commission on these sales.

For the first time the flyer is available to all newsagents and is available now for you to download from Connect. This initiative will give you the opportunity to distribute it throughout your territory either through email to all your 7 day Herald Sun home delivery customers or to print out as many copies as you need to either wrap and distribute with your morning deliveries or place inside customers statements.

Thank you in advance for your support of this promotion.

Yours sincerely,
David Ferriggi
